Second Creek Campground Improvements
Boundary Fencing and Visitor Experience Project
The District Council of Tumby Bay has secured $13,000 (ex GST) in funding from the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board under the Landscape Priority Fund for its Eyes on Eyre project to deliver targeted improvements at Second Creek Campground and day use area.
This project will strengthen site management, protect coastal environments, and improve the visitor experience at this popular coastal reserve.
Project Overview
Second Creek campground and day use area is a Crown reserve under Council care and control, supporting informal camping, day use parking and boat launching. Increased visitation has highlighted the need for improved infrastructure to better define site use and protect surrounding coastal vegetation.
This project delivers practical, low impact works to stabilise existing use without expanding the footprint of the site.
Funded Works
The approved project will deliver:
- Renewal of approximately 390 metres of boundary fencing from the Trinity Haven Road entrance throughout the site
- Reinstatement of the western boundary fence line to its original alignment
- Site preparation works to support fencing installation
These works will formalise the site boundary and improve access control.
Project Outcomes
The project will:
- Clearly define the campground and day use boundary
- Reduce informal vehicle access and site expansion
- Improve separation between camping and day use areas
- Protect surrounding coastal vegetation and dune systems
- Support more sustainable visitor use
Importantly, the project does not increase camping capacity or expand the site footprint.
Project Timing and Site Impacts
To enable safe delivery of the works, temporary site closures will be required.
Key timeframes:
- Mid–late April 2026
Advance notice signage installed at the site - May 2026 (anticipated)
Temporary closure of the campground and day use area to allow:- Removal of existing fencing
- Council site preparation works
- Installation of new fencing (anticipated for completion in late May 2026)
Council has engaged local contractor Stay in Line Fencing to undertake the fencing works.
Exact closure dates will be confirmed via Council’s website, social media and newsletter.
Future Improvements
While not part of the current funded scope, Council will use this project as an opportunity to progress broader site management improvements, including:
- Review of the existing honesty box payment system.
- Investigation of transitioning campground bookings to the Bookeasy system to improve booking management and compliance
- Installation of updated signage aligned with regional standards (subject to available budget).
Any changes to booking arrangements or use of online book easy system will be communicated separately following further assessment.
Program Context – Eyes on Eyre Funding
This project is separate to, but complements, other works previously delivered by Council under the Eyes on Eyre program. Through earlier funding rounds delivered by the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board under the Landscape Priority Fund, Council successfully received funding for other projects at Lipson Cove Campground.
Together, these projects demonstrate Council’s ongoing commitment to improving coastal infrastructure, protecting the environment, and supporting sustainable visitor use.
