Playgrounds
Playgrounds provide key opportunities for children, residents and visitors in our community to connect, develop and learn new skills in creative play environments. Some of our parks and gardens offer playground facilities, outdoor exercise equipment, skate parks and access to other amenities for public use. There are two main playgrounds located at the Tumby Bay and Port Neill foreshores.
Equipment upgrades
To continue to ensure that playgrounds meet stringent Australian standards and the requirements of the community, Council will be undertaking two upgrades at the Tumby Bay and Port Neill Foreshore Playgrounds for completion mid to late August 2024.
Consultation with children
Recently students from Tumby Bay Area School were engaged in a consultation process with Council, where they were able to share their ideas about playground design and the type of equipment they want to see at our main playgrounds.
Council was able to incorporate the children’s ideas and equipment that was within budget for both projects into the final designs.
Play re-imagined
Our play re-imagined video will take you through the journey of engaging our youngest community members and explore our new playground designs.

Temporary Playground Closure | Starting 23/07/2024
As part of Councils plans to upgrade the Tumby Bay and Port Neill foreshore playgrounds, site preparation will begin next week with new play equipment soon to be installed.
Council is excited to welcome Moduplay and Morph Construction who will breathe new life into our foreshore playspaces.
To ensure community safety during construction the playground sites will be temporarily closed. The Tumby Bay Foreshore playground will be the first to temporarily close on Tuesday 23/07/2024. Works are estimated to be completed at both sites in late August. The Port Neill foreshore Playground closure date will be advised soon.
Temporary site fencing will be located around the boundary of each playground site or the required construction zone. A reminder to be aware of traffic movement changes in these locations during construction and to not enter upon any construction zones.
During the closures, you can enjoy other recreation spaces nearby and with all other foreshore facilities such as the public toilets to remain accessible. Whilst we understand construction work and the temporary site closures may cause some short term inconvenience for residents, we appreciate your patience while we upgrade these much loved playspaces for our community.
The Tumby Bay Foreshore upgrades are made possible by Funding through the Australian Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure grant program.

No. The shade sails depicted in both plans are not part of this project. Any existing shade sails at each site will remain the same; with no new shade sails planned at this time. Each plan shows what new play equipment pieces are going into the play spaces. Information about the project is available on Council’s website.
Yes. The fencing will be replaced at Tumby Bay Playground as part of a separate project; planned to be relaced during playground construction.
The new play system at Port Neill will be slightly lower in height and a little bit smaller than the existing play system unit. However, the new design provides for the same play value, is within available budget and incorporates extra balance beams and steppers to connect the swings to the play system.
The old equipment is being removed because it is either an end of asset life, no longer able to be repaired or is not compliant to Australian standards. The equipment pieces that are being removed will be returned to the Council depot for storage and assessment for suitable disposal options. eg sale by tender, recycling, landfill etc.
Yes. The old fire truck has been well loved, however, it will be removed to ensure we are able to meet Australian playground standards. There will be a new truck installed in the junior play space. The area where the old truck is now will become an open grass area.
