Community Bus Update

The current District Council of Tumby Bay Community Bus has been serving the ratepayers of the area since 2011, and the time has come for it to be retired.

The service provided by the bus is defined as a Passenger Transport Service under the Passenger Transport Act 1994. This Act requires that a bus used to provide a service for fee, hire or reward in rural areas can be no more than 25 year old. As our bus is turning 25 this year it will not be renewed for this purpose beyond the end of our current Operator Accreditation expiry date at the end April 2024.

The Council has planned to continue this service, and a new replacement bus is on order. Unfortunately, in the current vehicle supply market, the delivery timeframe for the new bus is currently unknown and may not be until next year.

As a result, Individuals or groups who have previously been able to access the bus on a fee for hire arrangement will not be able to do so until the new bus is delivered and approved for Passenger Transport Services. In the interim, other options including charter services might need to considered if you are looking for bus hire.

The Council has committed to continue to make the current bus available to core users, including the Senior Citizens Club, Uringa Hostel and Red Cross on a no-hire arrangement until such time as a replacement is commissioned.
