Lipson Cove Campground - Upgrades
“Towards Eyes on Eyre” Project
Overview
The District Council of Tumby Bay will complete a scaled upgrade of the Lipson Cove Campground site, in line with portions of the Eyes on Eyre concept plan that was developed in 2019. The upgrades are made possible by a $47,602 grant from the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board under funding from the Landscape Priority Fund for its Eyes on Eyre project that is focusing on improvements to environmental management at priority coastal campgrounds.
The project will include new fencing throughout the campground to improve site definition and access routes. It will also deliver a more functional layout with the creation of three new campsites in the northern section of the campground, relocating some of the existing campsites away from the road and creating a safer one-way traffic flow.
This project does not propose to increase the existing number of campsites.
Revegetation will occur.
Signage
New interpretive signage will be installed. The new signage will bring the site into line with other campgrounds across the Eyre Peninsula and provide users with information about Lipson Cove’s history and promote the protection of the local environment.

Environmental management
As part of this project a Lipson Cove Environmental Management Plan was developed and approved by the Coastal Protection Board as part of the requirements for the approved native vegetation clearance. This plan is consistent with the broad objectives of the overarching Community Land Management Plan.
Aims
- Reduce the potential effect of recreation activities along the Lipson Cove coastline on the behaviour of a variety of wildlife, especially native animals, shorebirds and or predatory birds.
- Control and restrict recreational (vehicles, dogs, or persons) in high sensitivity coastal re-vegetation areas to reduce impact on habitat.
- Improve information for users of the site and share its historical information.
- Protect and enhance native vegetation area cover.
- Improve existing ecosystem to be climate resilient.
- Reduce risks of tourists accessing and impacting upon the natural environment.
- Further re-vegetate the existing protected areas and where site realignment occurs.
- Improve survival of native flora and fauna.
- Improve natural environment aesthetics for users of the site.
Key project elements
- Renew and re-define three existing double campsites.
- Creation of three new single campsites.
- New fencing throughout campground and beach walkways to inhibit pests and access to existing revegetation sites.
- Re-definition of the access road system and campsite to improve boundaries and re-direct foot traffic away from natural vegetation.
- Improve structural native diversity of existing remnant vegetation with locally native and appropriate vegetation types through revegetation.
- Installation of new interpretive and directional signage.
- Ongoing commitment to meeting performance indicators as outlined in the Lipson Cove Environmental Management Plan.

Summary
Whilst Council is not in a position to undertake the full scope of the Eyes on Eyre final concept design for Lipson Cove campground, we consider that this project provides a modified start to commence a scaled upgrade of the site which addresses some key opportunities that were identified in the original concept plan such as:
- redefinition of existing campsites
- creation of new campsites
- renewed site fencing and beach access ways
- protection of the existing revegetation project areas and infill of new re-vegetation at the site
- improved one way directional roadway use
- provision of interpretive signage to improve user experience of the site.
